Our values in practice describe the ways we aim to foster a healthy working environment.

Values in Practice of Auckland Sexual Abuse HELP

Working Safely
Working safely begins with acknowledging that our work with trauma can be difficult emotionally, spiritually and professionally. Therefore we need:

1. To be professionally well-resourced.
-quality supervision
-adequate training and therapeutic resources to do the job
-opportunities to share how we do what we do, and what we do well
-systems and resources to meet legal, administrative and  therapeutic needs

2. To work in an environment which supports us as the person doing the work.
-to be able to give and receive support with colleagues
-enough safety and self-care skills that we can take good care  of ourselves
-compassion re needs. e.g. flexability in use of special leave
-flexibility in working hours as far as possible
-functioning teams
-respectiful communication practices

3. To encourage external support.
-
a well resourced Trust Board
-maintain contact with others doing this kind of work

4. To work in a structure which balances our need to be involved in the agency with our need not to be burdened by also carrying concern about survival, and to recognise that this burden may be different for each individual.
-some structure whereby people can have more or less degrees of involvement in the agency as they choose

5. To maintain a balance in the agency between
-therapy
-education
-prevention
-politics and education aimed at societal change

6. To avoid replicating dynamics of abuse and trauma within the agency
-ways to speak about this with safety - use of an outside
facilitator
-transparency of processes and boundaries
-stability in the agency e.g. sound financial planning and
predictable routines

7. To each be aware of our own boundaries/edges and vulnerabilities
-responsible communication
-supervision
-therapy
-opportunity to balance our own caseloads

8. Recognition of the work that we do
-some form of recompense which leads to a win-win situation between the woman and the agency such as pay, placement supervision, training etc.

9. To work in a healthy and pleasant physical environment
-lighting, heating

-seating
-decorating
-fresh air
